Session Two: Boxing can make you feel like a long distance runner with an extra 20kg body weight

This week it became a bit clearer in the boxing training. The co-ordination is working better, although getting the breathing correct at all times whilst concentrating on my opponents next move can prove a bit difficult. But I’m getting there.

We started ‘touch boxing’ which made me realise how excited I am when it comes to the actual boxing against my opponent. I was compared to the Tasmanian Devil because of my fast foot movement, though that lasts for 15 seconds and I’m suddenly out of breath. Keeping in mind that each of the three rounds will last 2 minutes each!

That brings me to another difference compared to Rugby – the constant pressure on your feet, muscles – your whole body. Rugby requires a high fitness as well, but it’s characterised by intervals of intensity. So to speak you don’t need the same muscles and fitness as a long distance runner would need. Boxing feels like being a long distance runner with 20 kg extra on your body.
