Overview

What You will be doing:

The Technical Authors (or writers) help to communicate technical information about products or services in a way that is easy to understand

The information may be presented in the form of user guides for software applications, reference and instruction manuals for appliances, training guides or online help incorporated into software and operating guides.

Technical authors will have to establish an understanding of the product or applications and then design and write documentation to explain it to users. They may also provide this information in various other forms including software demos and interactive tutorials, using video, illustrations and graphics.

As members of scrum teams within the software engineering group Technical Authors will also be expected to perform other non-documentation work such – e.g. Testing.

Technical Authors may be involved in:

  • Assessing the nature of documentation and their requirements through close involvement with key stakeholders and experts.
  • Conducting research and the gathering of information, whether these are related to the technology or the customer utilization/experience of the service
  • Presenting the information which will include:
    • Organization information according to user/IT’s needs
    • Writing and editing
    • commissioning, coordinating or preparing illustrations;
    • indexing and cataloguing material;
    • copy-editing.

Technical Authors may:

  • work on multiple projects and services at the same time
  • need to create work schedules
  • market their skills to potential clients
  • keep up to date with market trends

 

Essential Skills

  • Experience with the Madcap suite of documentation tools include Flare, Capture and Analyser.
  • Experience with the Microsoft Office suite, particularly Microsoft Word. You should understand concepts such as the use of styles and macros
  • Experience with a graphics tool such as Visio or Photoshop.
  • Experience of writing documentation for financial services or compliance software
  • Experience with writing technical installation and configuration guides

 

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with Java.
  • Experience with J2EE
  • Experience with application servers such as JBoss, WebSphere and WebLogic
  • Experience with database such as Oracle, DB2 and SQLServer.
  • Experience with revision control systems such as SVN.
  • Experience with UNIX

 

 

Other Requirements

  • Degree in a technical discipline such as Software Engineering, Computer Science, Technical Writing, Physics or Maths, or a degree of any type and a graduate certificate in technical writing/communication
  • Experience working in Scrum Teams or other Agile methodologies
  • Demonstrate the ability to acquire new skills and put these to effective use.
  • Provide accurate estimates for documentation tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Take the initiative and assume ownership for tasks or problems.
  • An inquisitive nature, with the ability to ask the right questions of those people who have expertise on the area in which you are working.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills (English).
